Archuleta County is the gateway to 2.8 million acres of wilderness and national forest areas including the San Juan National Forest, Weminuche Wilderness Area and the South San Juan Wilderness Area. The San Juan Mountains in particular are famous for their deep snows and the Wolf Creek Ski Area which averages over 460 inches of snow a year. The light powder that often falls in December and January attracts skiers and snowboarders from around the world. Summertime is filled with opportunities to hike or bike into the wilderness and set your eyes on beautiful scenic panoramas from high alpine mountains to sandstone river canyons and high desert vistas.
